Still hurting from the Geraldine game two weeks ago, Sardis is trying to stay in contention for at least a second-place finish in Class 4A, Region 6.

“We figured all along that whoever won between us and Guntersville would be in the driver’s seat for second place,” Sardis High coach Gene Hill said. “Unfortunately, we had three defensive starters out and we played terribly.”

Missing Lions were defensive end Dalton Casey, linebacker Jesse Hubbard and linebacker Trent Noojin.

All three players plan to play this week, but defensive end Colton Sayler was injured against Guntersville.

Hubbard, who suffered a deep thigh bruise, is the Lions’ leading tackler.

“We let him warm up to see how it would do,” Hill said. “After warmups, [Hubbard] came over and said he couldn’t go. If anybody in the world could play with that bruise, it would be Jesse, so I know it was bad.”

St. Clair County comes in as a hard-luck team that just can’t find the victories.

“They’re scary good,” Hill said. “They’re the most athletic team we’ve seen this year. Their skill players are incredible and the rest of the team is very good, too. With a break or two, they could be right here with us in the standings.”

Last week against Guntersville, Scott finished 13-of-23 in passing for 139 yards and a touchdown. Brett Rains had six catches for 94 yards.

Keenan Lewis led the Lions on the ground with 13 carries for 84 yards.
