The Southside High girls basketball team may not have been out to make a statement on Tuesday (Jan. 14) in their first round game of the Etowah County Tournament.

The Lady Panthers, however, may have served notice that the championship may be theirs for the taking after soundly defeating West End 65-20, at Gadsden State.

Southside (7-9) will play Glencoe in Thursday’s semifinal round.

“The Etowah County Tournament is exciting and we needed to advance,” said Southside head coach Kim Nails. “West End coach Amy Springer has done an outstanding job after loosing some key players this season. I am proud of my teams effort tonight.”

The Lady Panthers jumped out to a 17-4 lead after one quarter and led 39-13 at the halftime break. The Southside lead grew to 59-17 after three quarters.

Blakely Alfred led Southside with 15 points, followed by Lindsey Hindsman with 11 and Kaylee Howell and Morgan Harris each with eight.

Morgan Harris pulled down 10 rebounds, while Mallary Smith grabbed eight.

Brittany Self led the Lady Patriots (7-10) with eight points.
