Coliform Bacteria Detected in Water Samples
Highland Water Authority routinely monitors your drinking water for total coliform bacteria. We collected 12 samples for coliform bacteria in October 2014 and 2 samples showed the presence of coliform bacteria. The standard is that no more than one of our samples can show the presence of coliform bacteria in a month.
Coliforms are bacteria that are naturally present in the environment and are used as an indicator that other potentially harmful, bacteria may be present. Coliforms were found in more samples than allowed and this was a warning of potential problems.
Follow up and Correction:
In October Highland Water Authority had a Bac-T sampling violation at one site. New samples were pulled from a site below and above the violation site, these came back coliform absent. The violation site was re-sampled and found to be coliform present. The faucet was replaced at violation site then re-sampled violation site, then site above and below. All results were then coliform absent. Six samples per month are pulled for Bac-T’s. November samples were coliform absent as well.
