Even though Wenonah High has won only five games, the defense has been stingy, allowing only 8.7 points per contest.
Raymond Richardson, Josephus Smith, Quincy Williams and DeAngelo Jackson lead the Dragon defense.
“I think they’re peaking at the right time of the year,” Southside coach Ron Daugherty said. “That 5-5 record is no indication of how good they are. They’re only a few points from being a 7-3 or 8-2 team.”
The Dragons’ losses are by a combined 24 points, and one was an overtime loss.
“We’ve got our work cut out for us,” Daugherty said. “Don’t let the records fool you. They’re big and strong and fast.”
The Dragons clinched the fourth Class 5A, Region 5 playoff slot by knocking off sixth-ranked McAdory, 8-0, in Week 9.
“(Wenonah) being able to shut out McAdory really told me how good they are,” Daugherty said. “Any team capable of that has a stout defense.”
Last week against Moody, Dantley Coker rushed 38 times for 338 yards and four touchdowns.
