Three local soccer squads win state, one is runner-up in Montgomery

The Fall Division II State Cup is compiled of boys and girls teams in five different age groups from ages 14-19. All four Gadsden-area Fusion Futbol Club teams qualified for the final four tournament in Montgomery this past weekend (Nov. 9-10), with all four teams making it to Sunday’s championship games.

Coached by Jessica Scerbo, the Lady Fusion 00 posted a 3-0 Victory Trussville United 00. The Fusion started off strong with a goal from Mary Kinley Hill and continued to dominate the game with goals from Alexis Beard and Madison Smith. Goalkeeper Madelyn Castor was credited with the shutout. It was the Lady Fusion’s second straight championship.

Coached by Jeremiah Massa, the Lady Fusion 99 beat Vestavia Attack 99 in the title game by a score of 6-1. Morgan Blalock scored a pair of goals for the Fusion, while Madison Clark, Destiny Johnson, Kelsey Patterson and McKenzie Rodocker each scored one goal. This also was the Lady Fusion 99’s second straight state championship.

Coached by Will Nsougan, the Lady Fusion 98 met the RCUSC Raptors for the U16 title and fell short by a score of 3-0.

Coached by Phil Elton, the Fusion 96 U18 boys posted a 2-1 win over Mobile United U19. The game was back and forth until Ivan Chavez scored to give the fusion the lead. Mobile United tied the game with 10 minutes left, but just when it appeared that the game would go into overtime, the Fusion’s Tyler Huffstutler took a rocket of a shot past the Mobile United goalkeeper for the winning goal.

The Fusion 96 completed its club games by winning three of the past four state championships. The team also advanced to the semifinals of the Region III President’s Cup this past summer.

The Lady Fusion 00 and the Lady Fusion 99 advanced to the Region III President’s Cup tournament in June of 2014 at Jack Allen Soccer Complex in Decatur.

The two teams will compete against the 13 states’ champions in Region III to determine which team will advance to the National Presidents Cup Finals.
