What a busy week is in store for our Dadeville senior exercise group, the Hummingbirds, which is a spin-off of the Golden Yellow Jackets of the Glencoe Senior Activity Center (the “Hummingbird” name reminds me of my mother).
Whether up in North Alabama or here in the south-central region, we are doing all we can to keep our adult senior community active and out of the nursing home.
Tuesday will be the monthly Gathering of the Hummingbirds, which is what we call our community adult senior luncheon. For this event, our church supplies chicken fingers while the group members bring a side dish. This month, our church music leader will provide the entertainment, and we are all excited. She does a very good job, and we all love her. If you know me well enough, you know that we will end our gathering with a friendly game of Bingo!
On Thursday, we plan to go to Peach Park in Clanton, which is much like the trip to the Apple Orchard in Ellijay that we used to take every year with the seniors in Glencoe. In Ellijay, we’d go downtown for some shopping and then to the Panorama for apple-flavored everything. With my new seniors in Dadeville, we plan to visit Petals from the Past, a plant nursery located close to Peach Park.
Many of my Dadeville seniors love flowers, so this trip will be something they might enjoy. Who knows, I might get a plant or two myself. We have had occasional plant swaps in the past because of their love for plants; it’s is that serious.
We plan to eat at Peach Park during our Clanton trip, whereas in Ellijay, we ate at Mike’s Restaurant. Either way, we plan to eat somewhere. This seems to be a staple in all our outings and is something I have no problem with!
Soon after the festivities, my house will be filled with our precious grandchildren, who will have plans to enjoy Vacation Bible School. We moved back to Dadeville from Glencoe to be with our “grands.” Having new seniors just puts icing on my blessing cake, although I miss the ones I left behind in Glencoe, as well as those fried apple pies in Ellijay!
