Victory takes two from Coosa

Coosa Christian High School dropped both games of a varsity baseball doubleheader with Victory Christian High School on April 2 in Class 1A action at Coosa. Victory defeated Coosa in the first game, 3-1 and edged the Conquerors in the nightcap, 10-9.

Both offenses exploded early in the second match.

Victory scored in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.

Coosa answered with three runs in the bottom half of the first inning.

Micah Mills walked and Noah Williamson drove a double down the left field line, scoring Mills. Taylor Walker followed moments later with a double of his own, scoring Williamson and giving the Conquerors a 2-1 lead.

Jonah Mills walked, stole second base and scored on Boo Shirley’s single up the middle, extending Coosa’s lead to 3-1.

Victory ignited in the top of the second inning, scoring four runs off two hits and two Coosa errors. Coosa trailed 5-3 heading at the end of two innings.

Victory slapped three consecutive hits to lead off the third inning. Coosa’s defense faltered, committing two more errors and giving up as many runs to widen the deficit to 7-3.

Coosa rallied in the bottom half of the third inning.

Jonah Mills led the inning off with a single to right field. Canaan Mills drove a 2-2 curveball to centerfield, scoring Mills. Drake Burger and Micah Mills walked to put runners on second and first bases.

Williamson reached first base off a throwing error by the Victory first baseman and both runners scored, tying the match at 7-7. Hunter Wood doubled to drive Canaan Mills home, and the Conquerors took an 8-7 lead.

Coosa’s defense surrendered more errors in the fifth inning, allowing two runners. Andrew Nelson and Austin Hickerson each singled to drive in a total of three runs and Victory regained the lead, 10-8.

Wood led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a double. Jonah Mills sacrificed to move Wood into scoring position. Shirley ripped a single down the left field line, scoring Wood and bringing the Conquerors to within a run, 10-9.

Victory closed out the remaining five Coosa batters in order to end the game.

Canaan Mills led Coosa’s offense, batting 4-for-4 with three stolen bases and an RBI. Williamson was 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Hunter Wood had two hits and as many RBIs, while Taylor Walker netted two hits and an RBI.

Walker was charged with the loss as Coosa dropped to 3-14 on the season.
