Westbrook splits in season opener

Westbrook Christian High School opened its 2012 baseball season on Feb. 20, splitting a doubleheader at Boaz High School in the Sand Mountain Tournament.

The Warriors dropped the opener to Class 6A Pell City, 5-3.

John Mayfield pitched three innings in the opener against the Panthers, giving up five runs. Matthew Reaves pitched four innings of relief and surrendered no hits.

David Mahaffey batted 2-for-3 with a homerun and a double.

In the nightcap, Westbrook outlasted Class 4A Cherokee County, 14-13.

Blaine Beaird’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Mahaffey from third base to give Westbrook the win.

Mikhail Cazenave gave up four runs over three innings. Jake Kilgo pitched four innings to earn the win.

Mayfield batted 2-for-2 and scored three runs. Reaves, Mahaffey and Jonathan Ford each slapped a hit.

Westbrook will face Ft. Payne Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
