Virginia Smith is a political mainstay in the City of Attalla.

Smith is currently in her third term as District 4 council member.

Few people know the neighborhoods and families of District 4 quite like Smith. She has lived at the same residence in her district for over 50 years.

“My husband and I bought our house not long after we were married,” Smith said. “I love my neighborhood and care very much for the people who live there.”

Smith could accomplish more than just a political victory this fall when she runs for council member of the City of Attalla. If elected, Smith will be the longest tenured female in the city’s political history.

Smith is not just involved with Attalla politically; she is very active in various organizations. She is a member of the Baptist church and the Eastern Star.

“I have served on several committees in Attalla over the years, including the Etowah County Tourism Board and the Attalla Tourism Board,” said Smith. “I also volunteer at the Smeltzer Center, a program that assists with special needs individuals.”

“I am proud of my reputation in my district,” Smith added. “I always try my best to help everyone in my district. I stay active in the community.”

Smith is a proponent of the improved roads and sewage issues in Attalla.

“We have made a lot of progress over the past few years with the roads and sewage situations, but much more needs to be done to see the job through. We are working on grants that could help us finish this out soon.”

Smith said there was no real secret to her political success.

“I do exactly what my signs say – ‘I am a neighbor who cares.’ I visit people a lot and talk with the people in my district. I think that is very important. If I don’t care about it then I shouldn’t be in [politics].”

“The people in my district care for me [at the polls] because I do what I say I will do. I have been fortunate to come out on top all three times I have ran for city council. I am honored to serve the people of Attalla and look forward to another productive term.”
