The City of Gadsden gave the gift of music – or the potential for it – to the Northeast Alabama Boys and Girls Club at the Aug. 28 city council meeting.
Council members voted to authorize the transfer of an Upright Singer Piano to the club. The piano had been in the Pow Wow Room at Noccaulula Falls Park, and was no longer needed there.
The Boys and Girls Club had expressed interest in the piano, and rather than having to pay to dispose of it, the city council vote dto transfer possession of the surplus property to the club.
In the same meeting, the city council approved spending $10,000 from unassigned funds to bring a citizenship education program to 5th graders in the city’s school system.
Councilman Robert Avery said the Super Citizen program is being used in some state school systems, and he heard positive reviews of it from one of those systems.
Avery said he recalled learning about Alabama history and U.S. history in school, but he said schools seemed to have moved away from that.
“This program tries to get back to that,” Avery said.
Councilman Ben Reed expressed his support for the educational program. He said the expenditure of $10,000 was a one-time appropriation to pay for materials for the program.
