One of the most prolific scoring teams in Class 1A awaits Coosa Christian this week.

Cedar Bluff, which has scored 99 points in just two games, has averaged at least 30 points a game since 2007. Before then, the Tigers scored over 30 points a game every year back to 2000.

This year’s edition appears to possibly be one of the highest-scoring Cedar Bluff teams yet. Last week, the eighth-ranked Tigers beat Valley Head 57-30, with the first 50 points coming in the first half.

“I know we’ll have to have one of our best defensive nights to try and slow them,” Conquerors coach Van Owens said. “There’s no way to stop their offense but you can try to slow it – and to try and score enough to still be in the game in the fourth quarter.”

“(Cedar Bluff) has so many weapons on offense that you can’t concentrate on just one guy,” Owens said. “It’ll be another tough week for us because they are definitely one of the top teams, if not the top, in the region.

“They always have a great offense and coach (Jonathan) McWhorter does a great job of getting them ready.”

The Tigers may be scoring a lot of points, but McWhorter still isn’t entirely happy.

“We’re not good enough to just show up and beat any team,” he said. “In practice, we’re focusing on what we do and trying to improve, week-to-week. We’ve got some good athletes but there are still a lot of things we need to fix. The defense still needs some shoring up, for example.”
