City of Gadsden Mayor Sherman Guyton announced the city is looking for retired law enforcement officers from any agencies or retired military personnel for part time positions providing security at city schools.

“We plan to have officers in every school,” Guyton said.

Gadsden Police Chief John Crane said the personnel hired would be expected to provide “normal diligence” just as they might be expected to on patrol.

Guyton and Crane said the city is seeking retired law enforcement or military personnel because they would already have the certification required under federal law to be allowed to carry a gun on school property.

Guyton said the city will seek state or federal funding to help pay the cost of putting security personnel in the schools.
“We’re going to do this regardless, if we can get the manpower,” Guyton said.

Including the alternative school, Guyton said the city has 13 school facilities to protect.
