Glencoe High’s baseball team is the epitome of youth this year.
The Yellow Jackets start three seniors, but several freshmen and sophomores dot the field.
“We’ve got a ninth-grader at third and another in center field,” coach Charlie Robertson said. “We’re starting a sophomore catcher. And there are a lot more young players on the bench. These ninth-graders are going to be really good players.”
Joseph Fails, Daniel Otwell and Dalton Reid are the team’s three seniors.
“Otwell is our catalyst on offense,” Robertson said. “We’re really going to miss his power next year. He’s one of the best batters in the area.”
Most of the positions are pretty well set, except for left field. Robertson has been starting different players in left in trying to settle on whom to put there for the rest of the season.
“We’re kind of all over the place with our lineups,” Robertson said. “According to who’s pitching, we may move several players around, to get the best effect.”
Will Parker, Houston Word, Dawson Roberts, Hunter Gibbs and Hunter Nunnally are some of the other names to look for.
Fails and Reid are the top two pitchers.
“Our pitching has been really good all season,” Robertson said. “There are probably going to be more games where they have to win it for us.”
