The Gadsden City Council voted on Aug. 6 to annex about 40 acres of property on Brooke Avenue into the City of Gadsden.
The property, often referred to as the Pump Station property, was purchased by the city at a tax sale, and there has been some talk of trying to do some development of the property so it can be used by the public.
Mayor Sherman Guyton said there’s been discussion of putting some lighting in there, and perhaps making the property open for kayakers.
Council member Bill Stewart said the pump station is a unique building, and he was glad to see the city taking it in.
In other action, the city approved an agreement with John Sutton to provide entertainment for the final show in the Summer Concert Series. Sutton will perform at 9 p.m. Sept. 6, after First Friday activities in downtown Gadsden. The show will be at the Mort Glosser Amphitheatre.
Council member Deverick Williams announced that the CED Mental Health Center is partnering with New Destiny Church at 201 Goldenrod Avenue in Gadsden to sponsor a Community Game Night Aug. 9 at the church. He said there will be food, prizes and fun for kids of all ages at the church.
Williams also invited everyone to attend a ceremony at 12 p.m. on Aug. 10 at Gadsden City High School auditorium to mark the unveiling of signs designating U.S. 431-Meighan Boulevard as Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Parkway through the city limits of Gadsden.
Retired Col. James L. Green will be the keynote speaker for the ceremony at Gadsden City High School.
