Etowah High graduate Patrick Nix was once the offensive coordinator at Georgia Tech. Now he’s running a lot of those triple option plays at Scottsboro High.
This is making it tough for other teams to prepare to play the Wildcats.
“We’re doing our best to learn to stop the triple option,” Southside coach Ron Daugherty said. “They’ve been running a lot of formations and a lot of offenses. But it all falls back to the triple option.
“And we can find no weak links in their lineup.”
Knowing that the Wildcats will get their big plays makes Daugherty want to use his team’s offense as a defensive weapon.
“The longer our offense is on the field, the longer theirs is off,” he said. “If we can run a lot of plays on every drive, we can maybe have success.”
As for Southside, Daugherty is still trying to fix penalty problems. He said there were a lot of penalties against Columbia and a lot of them are very fixable.
“We had a lot of offsides and things that are just unnecessary,” the coach said. “We’re still not in as good of shape as we can be in, either. That contributes to making mistakes.”
Last week against Columbia, Dantley Coker rushed for 192 yards and three touchdowns.
