Don’t let the Yellow Jackets’ record fool you. Oxford High is better than its record shows.

Just ask Gadsden City coach Matt Scott.

“They’ve got to be the best 0-2 team in the state,” he said. “Clay-Chalkville is a really good football team, and Oxford had its chances to win.”

Scott pointed to the backfield as a big part of the Yellow Jacket threat.

“They’ve got one of the top running backs (Racean Thomas) in the country,” he said. “And their quarterback (William Webber) has a really good arm, with some good receivers. As good as he is, you can’t concentrate on defending just Thomas or they’ll burn you with the passing game.

“They’re a very dangerous team to defend.”

As for the Titans, getting the season’s first victory helped the team’s attitude, but victories are not what Scott is looking for.

“I’m more interested in seeing us play four quarters and limiting our mistakes,” he said. “I was pleased with our effort against Florence (in a 28-7 Week 1 loss) but I was more pleased that they listened to us about the mistakes and corrected a lot of them. We blocked better on the corners and did a lot of the little things right.”

There were some mistakes in the first half against Lee and they were brought up during halftime.

“We came out in the second half and took control,” Scott said. “I’m always more concerned with the way we play than I am with the score.

“And I was very happy with the second half.”

Last week against Florence, Gabriel Ford  rushed for 94 yards and two touchdowns. Jay Copeland was 6-for-6 in passing for 68 yards.
