On Sept. 29, 1963, what was then known as Baptist Memorial Hospital opened its doors at a new facility on property donated by Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.
Thousands from Gadsden and the surrounding area attended a Sunday afternoon open house at the facility’s new location.
Fifty years later, Gadsden Regional Medical Center will mark the occasion with a celebration that will feature reflections by and recognition of those who have helped the hospital become what it is today.
The event will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 29, outside Building 400 on the hospital grounds.
A light lunch will be served.
Special guests will include former administrators J. Cecil Hamiter and Charles Roe, Dr. Lucian Newman Jr., Jimmie Leonard and several current and retired hospital employees.
Numerous area dignitaries will also be on hand and Gov. Robert Bentley has issued a commendation for the event.
The public is especially invited to attend.
