Celebrating 100 years of life for Corine Adair

By Donna Thornton/News Editor

One of Corine Adair’s life-long loves has been reading.

She said her favorite thing was to go to the library, according to the proclamation given to Mrs. Adair at the Sept. 17 Gadsden City Council meeting.

“The librarians looked forward to seeing her and would always tell her of new books that were on the shelves and this would put a sparkle in her eyes and a smile on her face,” the proclamation stated.

She still enjoys reading, City of Gadsden Mayor Sherman Guyton said, as he honored her for her 100th birthday, declaring Sept. 16, 2013 a  “Celebration of Life” for Mrs. Adair.

Mrs. Adair was born Sept. 16, 1913 in Goodwater, Ala.

She was one of three children born to Henrietta and Judge Marbury, and she’s the only one of their children still living.

Corine Marbury married Onzelo Adair in Gadsden when she was only 15 years old.

The couple had two children — the late Onzelo Adair Jr. and the late Doris McNair — and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her son Onzelo Jr. taught in the Gadsden schools.

Mrs. Adair worked at Ideal Cleaners in Alabama City. She is a member of Friendship Baptist Church on North 6th Street. While she hasn’t been able to go to church for a while,  she enjoyed being there on Sept. 15, 2013.

Guyton said Mrs. Adair had been receiving meals from MANNA for a number of years.

“I have been told she is an absolute joy to all the volunteers who deliver to her;” Guyton said.

Members of the council voiced their appreciation for and their congratulations to Mrs. Adair, who attended the council meeting, with her granddaughter Anne Adair Ware and others.
