“Get better or get worse.”

That’s the words that Ron Daugherty is preaching to his Southside High football team this week.

“If you’re not improving, you’re getting worse, because the competition is improving,” he said. “Hopefully we’re to the point where the guys are wanting to improve enough that they will find a way.”

Next up is Springville, a strong team that shows more than the two losses indicate.

“They’ve got as good of skill people as I’ve seen,” Daugherty said. “Even in the losses, they’ve looked really good at times.”

No matter the opponent, Daugherty tells the players the same things.

“If you take care of the ball, line up right and make tackles, you’ve got a chance against anyone,” he said. “Those sound easy but they’re easier to talk about than to make happen on the football field.”

Last week against Fort Payne, Blake Devine scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns.

Dantley Coker finished with 136 yards.

Hunter Sparks recorded two fourth quarter sacks.
