Don’t look now but Gaston High has played itself right into contention for a postseason berth.

Should the Bulldogs beat Fyffe, the standings in Class 2A, Region 7 will indeed be a shambles.

Gaston is currently tied with four other teams for third place and holds tiebreakers over Section and Westbrook. North Sand Mountain and Sand Rock both defeated the Bulldogs, though, so they hold those tiebreakers.

Going into the Fyffe game, Gaston coach Swane Morris said that familiarity is a big thing, as the Bulldogs and Red Devils have played each other every year of late.

“Knowing each other like we do makes the game like it should be – it turns it over to the kids,” Morris said. “There’s not a lot of tricking each other. We just line it up and play the game.”

Gaston comes in on a high after shutting out Westbrook. Now the question begs: Can the Bulldogs keep it up?

“Everybody gets excited about this kind of game,” Morris said. “The kids know they’re playing a ranked team and that gets them motivated.

“Westbrook is a good county rival but now we’ve got to turn around and play Fyffe the next week. We’ve just got to stay on that plateau.”

Last week against Westbrook, Jailyn Britton led Gaston with 130 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Ogles had 90 yards and a touchdown, while Collins had 16 carries for 77 yards and the two scores.
