When time came for Westbrook Christian Academy’s 12th grade government class to take on a Challenge-based Learning Project, government teacher Tammy Bean said, they researched and talked to community leaders to find a problem that needed to be solved.

Student Jerryn Migliore said they were surprised to learn there was no roadway in the state of Alabama named to honor the veterans of the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The class decided to try to remedy that situation.

This conflict, class member Hayden Clay said, is the war of his generation, and class members wanted to recognize its veterans.

Members of the government class appeared on Oct. 29 before the Gadsden City Council to ask the council to approve a resolution supporting a name change for U.S. 411, from the intersection with Interstate 59 near the Gadsden Mall to the Etowah-St. Clair county line.

Clay and Migliore said their class already had contacted the Alabama Department of Transportation to determine that there is no other honorary name for the stretch of U.S. 411 in question.

Class members addressed the Rainbow City Council this week also and received their support for the project.

Gadsden Mayor Sherman Guyton and members of the city council expressed their appreciation for the efforts the Westbrook government class has undertaken, and indicated that the council would pass a resolution supporting the renaming of that portion of U.S. 411.
