Sardis making short trip to Boaz

Sardis (5-4, 3-4) at Boaz (2-7, 2-5)

Last week’s results: Oneonta 62, Sardis 14; Etowah 31, Boaz 3

2012 result: Boaz 38, Sardis 35

Series record: Boaz leads 38-18-4

Neither team qualified for the state playoffs, so this game is meaningless.

Right?

Wrong!

Any time that Sardis High meets Boaz, it’s big because of proximity. Only an invisible line separates the Sand Mountain towns.

“I like it that we’re playing a rivalry game in the 10th week,” Lions coach Gene Hill said. “Some coaches don’t like having a rival game at the end of the season, because they think the kids might overlook a region game, but that’s not been a problem for us.

“This game is something to look forward to, but not big enough to overlook meaningful region games.

“It’s also one of those games where you can throw the records out the window and all that stuff.”

Records truly are meaningless in this one, as Boaz isn’t your typical two-win team.

“They’re one of the best three or four teams we’ll play,” Hill said. “They’ve had a lot of turnovers that have hurt them. But we’ll go in looking for turnovers and they won’t make any.”

Last week against Oneonta, Will Scott threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Brett Rains, while Keenan Lewis scored a 63-yard touchdown run.
