The Laureate Eta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi has had a busy couple of months. The first meeting in March was held at the home of Jennifer Graves, who provided a wonderful meal and presented the program on Redwood trees. She stated that the Redwood tree grows mostly in California. She also stated that they could grow as tall as 300 feet. Their wood is used in making furniture and other things. She also gave a brief history of her family.
The chapter enjoyed the area luncheon in Decatur, Alabama. The chapter also donated to Relay for Life. The chapter contributes to the event every year.
The second meeting in March was held at the home of Pat Thompson. She provided a delicious meal and presented the program. The program was entitled “Getting Old Is No Fun.” She spoke on things that could happen to us such as, misplacing items, forgetting to do things and forgetting where we are supposed to be.
The social of the month was held at Mariella McNair’s home. The name of the social was “Top Chef.” The husbands of the sisters cooked and served the meal and everyone enjoyed it.
The service of the month was a 90th birthday party for Margie Hood. The sisters then enjoyed the museum event, Plein-Air, where artists come to Gadsden and paint different areas in town.
The chapter voted on officers for the coming year. President, Sheila Elkund; Vice President, Jennifer Graves; Recording Secretary, Becky Shivers; Corresponding Secretary, Helen Graham; and Treasurer, Lynne Chappell. The chapter also elected its Woman of the Year.
The first meeting in April was held at the home of Helen Graham. Each sister provided a dish for the meal and everyone enjoyed it. Several of our sisters have been sick but are doing better now.
The service of the month was being hostesses at the museum for the Plein-Air reception. The artists’ paintings were on display. The program was that each sister shared a happy or sad event in her life.
The second meeting in April was held at the home of Linda Howard. She provided a delicious meal for all and she presented the program. She read several articles on sisters and friends.
Several members of the Beta Sigma Phi chapters in Gadsden met with the Huntsville chapters to finalize the plans for the state convention in Huntsville. The Gadsden Sisters are to lead the closing ritual.
Founder’s Day was held at Top of the River. All chapters in the city attended: Laureate Eta, Preceptor Zeta and Xi Alpha Pi. Each chapter awarded its Woman of the Year. The Woman of the Year is as follows: Laureate Eta, Helen Graham; Preceptor Zeta, Linda Hilleke; and Xi Alpha Pi, Barbara Wester.
