Alabama Power and United Way of Etowah County sponsored a social media workshop for not-for-profit organizations in Etowah County on Wednesday, July 30.

The “Social Media – Make it work for you!” workshop was held at 10 a.m. at the Bevill Center at Gadsden State Community College, where Emmy-winning television reporter Ike Piggott gave a social media presentation.

Piggott is an Alabama Power Communications Specialist who has over 16 years experience in television news and experience working with social media.

Alabama Power Eastern Division Area Manager Steve Hildebrant welcomed guests to the workshop.

Lunch was provided for guests from 11:30 a.m. until 12 p.m.

During the workshop, Piggott expressed that the main focus of the class was learning how to effectively use social media in today’s working world.

He talked about the improvements of communications over the years, and showed video clips of the early telephone system and how it was not so well received at first. Piggott explained the tremendous growth it received shortly after, relating to the way social media has grown and will grow over the next few years.

Piggott also talked about the importance of not-for-profits in the social media world.

He told guests, “If your car catches fire today and you have to leave the workshop, I can tell you that this is what you need to remember – the most important thing in using social media in the not-for-profit world is being connected with the right people.”

About 90 guests from not-for-profit and business organizations in Etowah County attended the workshop.

Etowah County United Way Executive Director  Joannne Hightower dismissed the workshop and announced winners of door prizes.
