Five area players were named to the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s all-state baseball teams for the 2013 season.
Westbrook Christian and Southside each had two players make the ASWA first team. Senior pitcher Mikhail Cazenave and senior third baseman Matthew Reaves made it from the Class 2A state runner-up Warriors, while representing the 5A state quarterfinalist Panthers were junior first baseman Drew Mullinax and junior outfielder Blake Devine.
As the ace of the Westbrook staff, Cazenave went 10-3 this season with 108 strikeouts in 81 innings. He finished with a 1.08 earned run average as Westbrook went 25-15, including an 8-3 mark in the postseason.
Reaves earned the Messenger’s All-Area Player of the Year honors after he batted a team-high .439 with 24 runs, 47 hits, 33 RBI, 12 doubles and three home runs. He went 7-for-8 with a pair of three-run home runs, a double and four singles against Randolph County in the state semifinals.
Mullinax finished with a .400 average while collecting 40 hits, 41 runs, 22 RBI 10 doubles and 17 steals. Devine batted .410 with 48 hits, 36 runs, 32 RBI, 16 doubles, four triples and 27 steals.
Making the Class 2A first team was West End senior second baseman Caleb Mayo, who last season batted .506 with 40 hits, 35 runs and 32 steals.
Five players were picked for the honorable mention teams – Gadsden City junior catcher Matthew Bishop, Southside senior pitcher Andrew Fuhrman, Etowah senior third baseman Josh Bobo, Westbrook senior first baseman Jonathan Ford and Westbrook junior pitcher/outfielder Jake Kilgo.
In 50 innings of work, Fuhrman went 8-1 with a 1.13 ERA while fanning 67 and allowing only eight earned runs and eight walks.
Ford batted .356 while contributing 36 hits, 24 runs, 23 RBI and 11 doubles.
Kilgo posted a 9-2 record with 43 strikeouts and a 1.53 ERA. At the plate, he had 43 runs, 39 hits, 16 RBI and 27 steals to go along with a .358 batting average.
In 25 games for the Titans, Bishop batted .412 with 28 hits and 15 RBI.
