Etowah, Sardis, Glencoe advance in area tournament action

For the second straight year, Etowah earned a spot in the subregional playoffs.
The Lady Blue Devils (11-17) edged Hanceville, 52-50, in the semifinals of the Class 4A, Area 11 Tournament on Monday, Feb. 6 at Oneonta. Etowah will face Oneonta in the title game on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m.
“It was a tight game all night, but we ultimately came out on top,” said Etowah head coach Ryan McCoy. “It was a very tough and physical game, and I’m very proud of the fight and resiliency our kids showed. We’re very excited about the opportunity we have in front of us.”
For the Lady Blue Devils, Jayleigh Devine (pictured above at right) finished with 19 points, six rebounds, six steals, five assists and three blocks. Laura Wood contributed 13 points and six bounds, Chloe Kelley added seven points and eight boards, Carlee Barksdale chipped in seven points and three rebounds and Aubrey Thompson had five points and two rebounds.

Sardis cruised past Crossville, 91-19, in the semifinals of the Class 5A, Area 13 Tournament on Monday, Feb. 6 in Sardis City. The Lady Lions (26-5) face Douglas in the area title game on Wednesday, Feb. 8.
Sardis led 23-4 after one period, 47-9 at halftime and 72-11 after three quarters.
“Douglas has a great team,” Sardis head coach Heath Cullom said. “We’ve had two two-point games with them (this season). Being at home should give us a little bit of an advantage (against Douglas). Hopefully our crowd shows up like they’ve been showing up, and we can find a way.”
Five Sardis players scored in double figures – Jayda Lacks with 22 points, Kaylen Wallace and Vada Willmore with 13 each, Grace Harris with 11 and Caroline Johnson with 10.

Glencoe defeated Westbrook Christian, 68-40, in the semifinals of the Class 3A, Area 12 Tournament on Monday, Feb. 6 at Ohatchee. The Lady Yellow Jackets will play Ohatchee for the area tournament title on Wednesday, Feb. 8.

Hokes Bluff lost to Ohatchee, 67-40, in the semifinals of the Class 3A, Area 12 Tournament on Monday, Feb. 6 at Ohatchee.

Ashville lost to Oneonta, 48-26, in the semifinals of the Class 4A, Area 11 Tournament on Monday, Feb. 6 at Oneonta.

Coosa Christian fell to Spring Garden, 72-16, in the Class 1A Area 12 Tournament semifinals on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at Spring Garden. In the tournament quarterfinals on Feb. 6, the Lady Conquerors defeated Gaylesville, 47-36.

Gaston lost to Sand Rock, 77-34, in the semifinals of the Class 2A, Area 12 Tournament on Tues., Feb. 7 at Sand Rock.

West End lost to Decatur Heritage, 56-30, in the semifinals of the Class 2A Area 13 Tournament on Monday, Feb. 6 in Decatur.
