Etowah Sheriff Horton appoints Johnny Grant as assistant sheriff

Sheriff Jonathon Horton announced Wednesday, July 19, 2023, that he has appointed Johnny Grant to the position of assistant sheriff. Grant will perform the duties of the sheriff in the absence of Sheriff Jonathon Horton and provide guidance to the command staff in daily operations of the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office.
According to a press release, Sheriff Horton is “excited about the wealth of knowledge and experience that Johnny brings to the Office of the Sheriff.”
Grant began his law enforcement career in 1975 as a patrol officer at the Altoona Police Department and served in that capacity until 1978, when he joined the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy sheriff. He served as a narcotics investigator from 1980 to 1987. Grant served as the Etowah County District Attorney’s Investigator from 1987 to 1996. He served as the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office Chief of Corrections from 1996 to 2000 and the Chief of Investigations from 2000 to 2007. Prior to retiring in 2012 from the sheriff’s office, with over 37 years of law enforcement experience, Grant served as Chief Deputy of the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office from 2007 to 2012. After retirement, he served another year as the District Attorney’s Investigator from 2013 to 2014 and served as Chief of Police for the Altoona Police Department from 2014 to 2020. He was elected as County Commissioner of District 2 in 2016.
Horton was a former subordinate in his previous role as Criminal Investigator to then Chief Investigator Johnny Grant from 2003 to 2004.
“Sheriff Horton considers Assistant Sheriff Grant a blessing and huge asset to continue to progress the Office of The Etowah County Sheriff as it strives to provide the best possible law enforcement services to the citizens of Etowah County,” the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release. “The knowledge and experience he has gained over four decades is an invaluable asset to the sheriff’s office.”
