Tuesday, August 22, 2023, marked the one-year anniversary of our hummingbird ministry. I thought about doing some funny stories like Pat Hill does at George Wallace Senior Center in Glencoe, but she is better at it than I ever was. The thought of asking trivia questions came to mind after our substitute Sunday school teacher did as much. I enjoyed it.
Our church pastor recently said that he never knows what is going to come out of my mouth. The problem is, I do not either. In Glencoe, I called our adult seniors the Yellow Jackets because everything revolved around the high school. I thought it might help make them a team in working together for a better quality of life. Their motto was, “We Still Got Sting.”
It is similar here in Reeltown, where I began spending time with our seniors because of my mother. Suffering from dementia, she was doing all she could, much like the hummingbird in a story I read. So, our Reeltown hummingbird motto is “Doing All We Can.” Whether a yellow jacket or a hummingbird, our seniors are doing all they can as a group or a team. Like our pastor says, “We are better together.”
I am thinking that it would be neat to Face Time Pat Hill and introduce her to our Reeltown hummingbirds, who have expressed interest in meeting her. I think it would be a blessing on both sides.
I keep thinking about that song by Ray Boltz, “Thank You, for Giving to the Lord.” My life keeps changing with God continually putting people in my life who blow my mind, including folks who teach me, change my perspective and help me grow me closer to God.
With humble appreciation, I would like to reflect on all these changes in 20 minutes. There is no telling what is going to come out of my mouth!
