From God’s word – Do you believe in the goodness of God?

By Toni Ford

During the past week, many of us watched the grand finale of American Idol with CeCe Winans and Roman Collins singing the song, “Goodness of God.” If you did not see it live on TV, then I am pretty sure you saw it posted on many social media sites. Below is one of the YouTube links that received 370,776 viewings since May 19 alone: CeCe Winans and Roman Collins Sing “Goodness of God” – American Idol 2024 (YouTube.com). You can copy and paste it onto your browser in order to listen.

“Goodness of God” has been out for several years, yet the way so many people have posted it on their social media pages and hearing all the talk, it makes you wonder as to what made this performance so much more special. As I listen and watch the link, the answer for me is that you can sense the power and presence of the Holy Spirit as the two musicians sang this song.

CeCe sings this song with such conviction because she truly believes in the goodness of God, and I was challenged once again as I listened to this song. As times become increasingly harder, will I stand on this foundation – that God is good, past, present and future?

I’ve included the words to this song, and I challenge us all to read these words and ask ourselves if we truly believe these words and phrases, or do we just sing them because it is a pretty song. We are living in challenging times, and it will only become more challenging in the years ahead. When we come upon hard days, will we be able to say, “Regardless of what happens, I still know that God is good, and He can bring about good in the hard times.”

I love You, Lord

For Your mercy never fails me

All my days, I’ve been held in Your hands

From the moment that I wake up

Until I lay my head

Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God

Because all my life You have been faithful

And all my life You have been so, so good

With every breath that I am able

Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God

I love Your voice

You have led me through the fire

In darkest night You are close like no other

I’ve known You as a Father

I’ve known You as a Friend

And I have lived in the goodness of God, yeah

Because all my life You have been faithful, oh yes You have

And all my life You have been so, so good

With every breath that I am able

Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God

Your goodness is running after, it’s running after me

Your goodness is running after, it’s running after me

With my life laid down, I surrendered now

I give You everything, oh Lord

Your goodness is running after, it’s running after me

Your goodness is running after, it’s running after me (oh yeah, oh yeah)

Your goodness is running after, it’s running after me

With my life laid down, I surrendered now

I give You everything

Your goodness is running after, it keeps running after me

And all my life You have been faithful

And all my life You have been so, so good

With every breath that I am able

Oh, I’m gonna sing of the goodness of God

I’m gonna sing

Think and dwell upon these Scriptures that speak of the goodness of God. Notice that at times we have a part to play in our obedience and trust in Him before we will see His goodness in our lives. Mostly, may we be encouraged knowing that our God is good. He is good all the time!

Genesis 1:10 says, “God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good.”

I Chronicles 16:34 says, “Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!”

Psalm 34:8 says, “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!”

Nahum 1:7 says, “The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him.”

John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that for those who love God all things work to-gether for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”

1 Peter 2:3 says, “If indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.”

Lord, thank You for being a good God! We pray that we truly would be able to say that every morning when we wake up until we lay our heads down at night that we speak, sing, and reflect on the goodness of God!

If you would like continued prayer, feel free to email me at tonif77@gmail.com. I would love to pray for you!
