A couple of weeks ago, I shared how for me personally, worship is one of the fastest avenues to encountering God’s presence. In that column, I shared a song that has ministered immensely to me this year.
Another song has come to mind during this Thanksgiving season, one which I would like to share with you this week. I appreciate how the name of the holiday itself, “Thanksgiving,” challenges me to slow down a bit and reflect on all the things I am thankful for.
I imagine that all of us experienced challenges throughout this year. Yet, in spite of those challenges, I still find myself thanking God for His goodness in my life each morning when I wake up.
The goodness of God never changes or wavers based on my actions or my circumstances. God’s goodness is His character and it is who He is. That is a foundational truth that has and always will be unchangeable. People often ask me, “How do you make it in this life?” My answer is that I stand on the foundations of truth of who God is, and this is one of those foundations on which I stand, for if I truly believe that God is a good God, then I am able to trust Him with EVERYTHING that happens in my life.
Before I share the words of the song, allow me to share a couple of verses from Scripture that remind us of this truth.
* Romans 8:28: “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.”
* Genesis 50:20: “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive.”
* I Timothy 4:4: “For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with gratitude.”
His Word speaks of His goodness over and over. Below you will find the lyrics to the song, “Goodness of God” written by Bethel Music. The Lord has drawn me to this particular song as a reminder of His goodness in my life. Take the time to read the words of this song and reflect on God’s goodness in your own life. I also encourage you to click on the link below to hear CeCe Winans sing this song so beautifully.
“I love You, Lord, For Your mercy never fails me.
“All my days, I’ve been held in Your hands, from the moment I wake up until I lay my head.
“Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God, and all my life You have been faithful,
“And all my life You have been so, so good.
“With every breath that I am able, oh, I will sing of the goodness of God!
“I love Your voice, You have led me through the fire in the darkest night.
“You are close like no other, I’ve known You as a Father, I’ve known You as a Friend, I have lived in the goodness of God.
“And all my life, You have been faithful, and all my life, You have been so, so good.
“With every breath that I am able, oh, I will sing of the goodness of God!
“Your goodness is running after me, and with my life laid down, I’m surrendered now.
“I give You everything because Your goodness is running after me (repeat).
“With my life laid down, I’m surrendered now.
“I give You everything because Your goodness keeps running after me.
“All my life You have been faithful, and all my life You have been so good.
“With every breath I am able, oh, I’m gonna to sing of the goodness of God (repeat).
“Because all my life You have been faithful, and all my life You have been so good, with every breath that I am able, oh, I’m gonna sing of the goodness of God (repeat).”
Thank you, Lord, for Your goodness. Today I declare in my own life, just as the song says in those last two lines, that with every breath that I am able, I will sing of the goodness of God today and forever!
