Lady Panthers win area basketball title

Southside outscored Boaz 7-2 in the second overtime period for a 57-52 victory, earning the Lad Panthers the Class 5A, Area 10 Tournament title on Saturday (Feb. 9) at Boaz.

Southside (19-6) hosts Columbia (13-17) in the 5A subregional round on Thursday.

Southside led 14-9 after one quarter and 26-23 at halftime before the Lady Pirates (13-14) took a lead 35-31 heading into the fourth quarter.

The game was tied 43-43 at the end of regulation and 50-50 after the first overtime.

Tournament MVP Haley Troup finished with 25 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals for Southside.

Jakarri Mikissack and Beth Allen Smith each added seven points for the Lady Panthers, while Savannah Thomas chipped in six.

Troup was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Thomas, Sydney D’Eath and Molly Tucker. Etowah’s Maelin Trammel also made the team.
