The Gadsden Public Library had some visitors on Friday, October 7. The local Lowe’s Heroes team came to clean up the library grounds and donate items.

“We are basically making this more beautiful,” said team leader Josette Clark.

The Heroes team had two shifts of about 15 people mulching, weeding, cleaning up dead debris, trimming trees and shrubs and leaf blowing.

The first thing the team did was set up five new raised flower beds in the Gadsden Public Library Park. The five new beds will be used for teaching children and students with special needs. The library has already seen gardening successes with three flower beds that were in the park. Children have planted flowers, vegetables and herbs as part of summer educational programming.

Lowe’s also donated a big flowerpot, a birdbath and a greenhouse that will be set up at a later date. Additionally, the team plans to extend the fence around the current garden beds to protect the new ones.

The local Lowe’s Heroes team picks one project every year as a way to give back to the community that supports them.

“We want to get people to give back to the community,” said Clark.

Lowe’s began to give back in 1957 with the Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation which awards money to help improve communities.

Lowe’s Heroes teams work in communities throughout the nation, and even in other countries. The company was proud to announce that last year 100 percent of its U.S. stores participated in the program.

The Lowe’s website says that “Lowe’s Heroes, working with our partners and community members, volunteered thousands of hours of their time.”
