The first step in filling the District 30 seat in the Alabama House of Representatives is complete after voting Tuesday in the Republican primary.

Mack Butler won the Republican nomination and will face Democrat Beth McGlaughn in a Dec. 11 vote.

“I have been truly humbled by the outpouring of support we’ve received throughout this campaign and appreciate the Republican voters placing their trust in me to serve as their nominee in this very important special election,” Butler said in a statement.

“I would also like to thank and congratulate Rob McHugh on a well-run campaign. He is a highly respected member of the community and I look forward to working with him going forward,” Butler added.

McHugh, who is from Steele, took the majority of votes in St. Clair County – 502 to Butler’s 182.

However, Butler carried Etowah County, 995 votes to McHugh’s 462, giving him the win by around 200 votes.

“Our team will now turn its focus and energy towards the general election and filling the tremendous shoes left by my friend Blaine Galliher. House District 30 deserves to have continued conservative, fiscal responsible leadership in Montgomery.”

A special election was required to fill the District 30 seat after Galliher left the position to accept a position in Gov. Robert Bentley’s cabinet.
