Pastor Dave pulls a fast one

This past Sunday afternoon, I was settling in for a nap while my husband Alan was out riding one of his treasured motorcycles. Just when I dozed off, my phone rang. I could not understand who the caller ID said was calling. It sounded like my daughter’s name, but it was not. It turned out to be David Bankson, our former pastor from Cove Creek Baptist in Glencoe, and his beautiful wife Charlotte. They were visiting some of my favorite people who lived in the apartments behind the George Wallace Senior Center. Pastor David and Charlotte only made it through one unit, which does not surprise me. I always enjoyed visiting residents in those apartments and the people at Cove Creek, and I know they enjoyed each other. What a blessing! David, who is an officer in law enforcement in addition to serving as a pastor, visited our senior center one time in uniform and driving an Etowah County Sheriff’s Department patrol car, which made my boss Pat Hill a bit nervous when he said he was looking for me. The seniors thought they were going to see me in handcuffs. Some were excited, while some looked at me as if I might have been James Dean’s sister. Some were rather quick to show Pastor David where I was. Pat was happy to find out that I was not being arrested. She enjoyed meeting our new pastor and several of the seniors visited Cove Creek after this encounter. As soon as Alan returned home, I told him that Pastor David had called. Alan then turned on Cove Creek’s live stream on YouTube. It was great seeing some of the people we left after our move back to Dadeville. During our phone conversation, David and Charlotte asked when we were moving back to Glencoe. David said that we lived on Lake Martin and were not coming back. I let him know that it was our grandchildren holding is in place, not the lake (our son Joseph had just left the house with two of the grandchildren before the Banksons called). Our “grands” were the only reason we left Glencoe. Until our children think we are cool again, our grands will be the only reason we stay in Dadeville. David and Charlotte responded with understanding but requested a visit from us soon. I agreed to do so and quickly challenged them to visit us. It would be funny if David pulled the same stunt at our current church that he pulled at the senior center. Be advised that our current pastor stays on the alert about me. I might have had a few run-ins with the law in the past, but It was nothing serious. We laugh about it now. Well, most of us do, anyway.
