The makeup of a neighborhood has many attributes. It is not only a geographical location that has homes, businesses and commercial business, but it is a place that will take on the characteristics of the people living in the community. The neighborhood is a place that encourages human contact and social activities. Families and friends gather to show pride, love and a sense of warmth for one another.

The Carver Revitalization Committee’s vision is to rejuvenate the Carver Community located in the Tuscaloosa Avenue area of Gadsden. On the first Saturday of each month, activities, games and events are planned to encourage friends, families and businesses to come out and enjoy the fellowship, love and friendship of their neighbors. Carver Revitalization was a vision of Jalania Harris, Alva Wilson and Eleanor Cox. Growing up in the neighborhood, they saw the changes that had taken place over the years. There was-and is-a need to restore homes and increase beauty in the District 3 area. These ladies’ dreams and ideas are working to become a reality. The committee is credited with giving scholarship, decorating the lampposts that line Tuscaloosa Avenue and holding an annual Christmas parade on the first Saturday in December.

This past first Saturday (June 7) was filled with excitement on the grounds of the Carver facilities. As one approached the area, children were playing and families were gathering to enjoy the entertainment. The Kappa Gamma (girls) and the Kappa Beta Phi (boys) from the high school were in rare form doing their stepping performance. Voter registration, campaigning, a CrossRoads boxing demonstration, an ECR medical unit and a little league team all were a part of the happenings. Apple dumplings, hot dogs, fish, barbeque and plenty of soda and water were available for the attendees. As Mr. Rogers said on his long-running television series, “It’s a great day in the neighborhood,” and so was the scene for First Saturday.

The Carver Revitalization Committee is promoting sustainability, community involvement and diversity among residents. The question is, what can we contribute to the character of the neighborhood?
