It was a busy weekend in the neighborhood.

On Saturday morning, the Mt. Zion Baptist Church of East Gadsden held a Women and Youth Conference. Three lecturers spoke on the theme “How to Reclaim, Retrain and Retain.” Jimmie Leonard kept the group moving with the song “Happy.” Guest speaker Dr. Doris Petty of Bessemer expounded on the subject of commitment, stating that as people of God, we must be committed to serving. Our hearts were captivated by spoken word artist Elizabeth Croft, and Epiphany Cherry soothed our hearts with her medley of songs. The youth speaker for the morning was spoken word artist La Quentin Ragland.

As the evening progressed, members of the Gadsden Alumnae Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi and their guests prepared for an evening of music, food and dance. Each year, the All White Attire event is held to raise funds for scholarship. The Gadsden Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi is a public service organization.

On Sunday, Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church held Friends and Family Day.

Members of the congregation invited family members and friends to share in the worship service. The guest minister was the Rev. Robert Duncan from Mt. Home Baptist Church of Sycamore. The theme was “What a Fellowship It’s a Joy Devine.” Pastor Duncan said fellowship was a time of sharing similar ideas, a close relationship with friends and companionship of peers in a friendly atmosphere.

Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church celebrated its pastor’s second anniversary. The Rev. and Mrs. Roderick Thomas and family were honored on their special day with a spirited-filled program. The guest speaker was the Rev. Thomas Hunter of the Macedonia 17th Street Baptist Church Birmingham. Pastor Hunter’s encouraging words came from Nehemiah 6:1-4: “I’m Too Busy I Cannot Come Down.” Pastor Hunter told the Rev. Roderick Thomas to continue being busy in the work of the Lord.
