Yes, summer is almost over, and school will be back in session before you know it. We’ve all been there as parents too, as soon as your kid gets in the car to quickly head to after school activities they say those words that change everything: “I’m hungry.” We can begin the interrogation about what happened to the lunch we sent them with or all the cafeteria food that was on the menu for that day, but none of that will change the fact that food just became an immediate need.
The greater Gadsden area is filled with fantastic options for after-school snacks, each offering its own unique flavors and atmosphere. Whether you’re in the mood for something sweet, savory, or refreshing, these top five spots are sure to provide the perfect treat to end or continue your school day on a high note.
1. The Sweet Nation
1960 Rainbow Drive, Gadsden
Located on Rainbow Drive in the Clubview area, Sweet Nation offers a unique twist on classic snacks with its Korean corn dogs, tropical drinks and boba teas. These flavorful treats are perfect for a quick bite or a refreshing drink to boost your energy after school. If you have more time to spend, they also have a great selection of board games. I always get a wide-eyed reaction from my kid when I say we’re going here, and it’s our favorite place for Boba.
2. Nikki’s Grazing Boards
5340 Old US Hwy 278, Hokes Bluff
Nikki’s Grazing Boards brings creativity to snacking with their beautifully arranged “Snackleboxes”. These portable, personalized boxes are filled with a variety of bite-sized treats, from cheeses and crackers to fruits and nuts. Ideal for those who enjoy a bit of everything, Nikki’s Grazing Boards is a fantastic place to satisfy your post-school hunger in a fun and healthy way. She also makes them for adults, with ingredients like goat’s cheese and some exotic flavors.
3. Big Chief in Glencoe
600 Main Street W, Glencoe
For those craving something more hardy and delicious, Big Chief in Glencoe is the go-to destination. Famous for their tasty quick burgers and milkshakes, this iconic spot delivers on flavor and nostalgia. Whether you’re in the mood for a classic cheeseburger or a creamy chocolate milkshake, Big Chief offers a satisfying snack experience that’s sure to hit the spot and my favorite is the famous Chuck Burger.
4. Andi Pandie Candies Pretzels & Snacks
20 5th Ave N.W. Attalla
Opened just this year, Andi Pandie Candies Pretzels & Snacks is already a sweet tooth’s paradise. Located in downtown Attalla, this charming shop serves up an array of sweet goodies, including cookies and brownies, but also has savory favorites like nachos and spicy bowls. Whether you’re looking for a savory treat or a sugary indulgence, Andi Pandie has something for whatever you or your kids are craving.
5. Mars Shaved Ice in North Gadsden

For a cool and refreshing treat, Mars Shaved Ice in North Gadsden is the place to be. Specializing in a massive variety of shaved ice flavors, milkshakes, nachos and banana splits, Mars offers a delightful escape from the heat that will still be with us for a few more months.
