West End hires new football coach

By Shannon J. Allen/Sand Mountain Reporter

One-time Geraldine High School head football coach Kyle Davis became the new head coach at West End.

Davis’ hiring was approved during the Etowah County Board of Education’s monthly meeting on Tuesday (June 10).

Davis succeeds Randy Hallmark, who resigned in April after two seasons in his second tenure at Walnut Grove.

Davis is the Patriots’ sixth head coach since 2000, following Butch Dixon (1998-2002), Mike Smith (2003-06), Matt Brooks (2007-08), Hayden Stockton (2009-11) and Hallmark.

Davis inherits a program that’s suffered six consecutive losing seasons. The Patriots finished 0-10 in 2013, allowing a school-record 404 points.

Davis was hired at Geraldine in July of 2003. He succeeded Tim Cochran, who left GHS in June of that year to become head coach at Plainview.

The Bulldogs finished 6-4 in 2003, including their third consecutive victory over archrival Crossville. In 2004, the ’Dogs started 0-3 but won five of their final seven games to finish 5-5.

Davis served as head coach at Escambia County from 2005-09.

Last season, he was offensive coordinator at Pensacola High School in Pensacola, Florida.

The Patriots will compete in Class 2A, Region 7 against Fyffe, Collinsville, Ider, Section, Gaston and Cleveland during the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

Hallmark also served as West End’s assistant principal.

Also on at the June 10 meeting, the ECBOE approved Jeff Johnson as the school’s new assistant principal. Johnson is a former principal of Boaz Middle School and spent last year as an assistant football coach at Etowah High School.
