Westbrook Christian took advantage of five Ohatchee turnovers to defeat Ohatchee, 20-6, to open Class 3A, Region 6 play.

Ohatchee’s turnover troubles began on the opening kickoff when the Indians coughed up the ball, which was recovered by the Warriors’ Gilberto Rosas. Wilson Appleton hit Chris Underwood for a 23-yard touchdown pass on the next play.

Westbrook Christian added its second touchdown on a pass from Justis Glassford to Chandler Richards in the second quarter.

The Indians put together several drives traveling into Westbrook Christian territory but none ended in any points.

On four straight possessions spanning from the third to fourth quarters, Ohatchee turned the ball over. Westbrook’s Dalvin Lewis recovered a fumble and Andrew Schauer intercepted two passes.

“Anytime you play in sloppy conditions like this,” Westbrook head coach Tony Osborn said, “that’s usually going to be a factor.”

The fourth turnover was what did Ohatchee in.

The Indians took over on their own 15-yard line with 3:39 left in the game – down 13-6 –  and on the second play of the drive fumbled to give the Warriors the ball. Westbrook’s Jake Christenberry scored on a 22-yard run two plays later.

Westbrook Christian had 61 yards rushing from Christenberry and 56 yards passing from Appleton.

The Warriors host Glencoe next week in more region action.
