Blue Devils paste Brewer

By Mike Goodson/Sports Correspondent

Etowah High scored early and often on the way to a 41-7 win over A.P. Brewer in a non-region game last Friday (Oct. 9) in Attalla.

“We were afraid of a let-down after last weeks heart breaking one-point loss to Guntersville,” said Etowah High head coach Drew Noles.

Noles need not have been concerned, as Paul Ruiz opened things up with a touchdown run less than three minutes into the game. The extra point by Raul Hernandez put Etowah (5-3, 3-1 Class 5A, Region 7) up 7-0.

Before the first quarter ended, Stacy Williams scored from 35 yards out and Andy Noles added a 14-yard quarterback keeper for a 21-0 lead.

Ruiz found the end zone again on a 36-yard run with 9:19 left in the second quarter, and Darius Moore scored from 1 yard out with less than a minute left to give the Blue Devils a 35-0 lead at halftime.

Ruiz scored for the third time with a 7-yard run with 4:40 to go in the third period to give the Devils a 41-0 lead.

The visitors from Somerville scored the final points of the evening on a 19-yard touchdown pass, ending the shutout with 1:30 left in the third quarter.

Stacy Williams led Etowah with 88 yards rushing on seven carries. Paul Ruiz added 79 yards rushing on five carries. Andy Noles was 6-of-7 in passing for 88 yards.

“We got a lot of kids in the game early,” said Drew Noles. “I’m proud of the job our coaches did.”

Etowah returns to region play next week with a home game against Boaz.
