Lady Blue Devils win own tournament

The Etowah High softball team went 4-0 to win its tournament last Saturday (Mar. 19) in Attalla.

The Class 5A No. 9 Lady Blue Devils (15-7) posted an 8-0 shutout over Saks in the championship game. At the plate for Etowah, Madison Grant went 4-for-4 with a home run, a triple, a double, three RBI and three runs scored. Grant also was the winning pitcher, striking out 12 while allowing two hits and no walks in six innings.

Alyssa Howard went 3-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a run scored, while Melissa Lover had a hit and two RBI. Taylor Bush and Jessica Smith each had a hit and a run scored.

The Lady Blue Devils reached the finals with an 11-1 victory over Faith Christian. Emma Jones went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored; Grant went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored; Love went 2-for-2 with a run scored; Bush and Howard each had a double, three RBI and a run scored; Krislyn Farmer had a triple and two RBI; Bree Vasser had a double and two runs scored; and Smith had a double, an RBI and a run scored. In four innings, winning pitcher Katie Parrish allowed one hit and no walks while fanning five.

Etowah opened the tournament with a 4-0 win over Weaver. Love had two doubles and two runs scored; Grant went 2-for-2 with a double; and Vasser had a double and three RBI. Grant went seven innings for the win, striking out five while allowing one hit and two walks.

The Lady Blue Devils then defeated Ohatchee by the score of 8-3. Smith went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI; Vasser went 2-for-3 with two runs scored; Howard went 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI and a run scored; Grant went 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored; and Jones had a hit, an RBI and run scored. Grant earned the win after scattering four hits, one earned run and four walks with one strikeout.
