Three area players were named to the 2012 Alabama Sports Writers Association All-State softball teams.
Glencoe’s Jamie McGuire and West End’s Courtney Oliver were given first team honors, while Sardis’ Kameron Carter was given honorable mention.
McGuire was named first team catcher of Class 3A. The junior led all area schools in batting, posting a .526 batting average over 133 at bats. The junior had 12 home runs, 25 doubles and 65 runs batted in. She walked 23 times and struck out only three times. McGuire scored 45 runs for the Lady Yellow Jackets.
McGuire’s skills were not limited to batting. McGuire called pitches for battery mate Sims and directed the Glencoe defense on the field. She held runners in check with her powerful and accurate throwing arm and was a defensive wall behind the plate.
Oliver was named Class 2A first team first-baseman. The sophomore led the Lady Patriots’ offense with a .492 batting average off 58 hits. She led the team with 35 runs batted in and 16 doubles. She also had three home runs.
Carter was given Class 3A honorable mention as a designated hitter. She paced the Lady Lions offensively with a .407 batting average.
