Robert Avery, Councilmember of the City of Gadsden, has been appointed to chair the National League of Cities’ (NLC) Finance, Administration & Intergovernmental Relations Committee in 2013.  Avery’s appointment was announced today by NLC President Marie Lopez Rogers, Mayor, Avondale, Ariz.

The Finance, Administration & Intergovernmental Relations Committee is responsible for developing policy positions on issues involving national economic policy, general financial assistance programs, liability insurance, intergovernmental relations, Census, municipal bonds and capital finance, municipal management, antitrust issues, citizen participation and civil rights, labor relations, Native American sovereignty and municipal authority. These positions are considered annually by NLC membership and incorporated into the National Municipal Policy. They also help guide NLC’s federal advocacy efforts.

Working with Avery as committee vice chairs are Sarah Levison (Longmont, CO) and Cynthia Mangini (Enfield, CT).

“Our committee leadership plays an integral role in shaping NLC’s policy positions. I look forward to working with these dedicated city leaders as we advocate NLC’s message and priorities on Capitol Hill, with the Administration and in our cities and towns across the country,” Mayor Lopez Rogers said.

“I feel very honored to be in a position to help shape the policy regarding issues that will be affecting our city, as well as other cities and towns across our country,” Avery said. “I will work very hard to ensure that their needs and concerns are discussed.”

The National League of Cities is dedicated to helping city leaders build better communities. NLC is a resource and advocate for 19,000 cities, towns and villages, representing more than 218 million Americans.
