It’s one win in the books and three more to go in the Westbrook Christian boys soccer teams’ quest to return to the Class 4A state championship match.
In a first-round game against Jacksonville on Monday, April 29, the Warriors posted a 3-0 shutout in Rainbow City.
“I think we went out and went after it like we were supposed to tonight,” said Westbrook head coach Danny Dunlap. “I wished we had played better in the second half when we kind of got out of our lanes a little bit. But we’ve played a really tough schedule this year, and I’m proud of our guys for fighting through some adversity earlier in the season when we were really beat up.”
The Warriors netted all of their goals against Jacksonville in the first half. Jake Edwards’ score on a header off a centering pass from Ethan Saffron came within the first two minutes. J.D. Berndt then scored a pair of goals, with an assist on one of them by Eggo Alibassi.
Westbrook (13-12-1) travels to White Plains for a second round game on Friday, May 3 in Anniston.
‘I know that [White Plains] is as equally talented as last year when we played them,” said Dunlap. “We’re looking forward to a good match. We’re an experienced bunch, so games like this one are nothing new to our guys.”
