Reflect on the cross, remember the cost

By Shawn Blackmon

Good Friday forces us to slow down and face the weight of what Jesus endured. The cross was not symbolic. It was real. The pain was real. The sacrifice was real. And in His final moments, Jesus did not stay silent. He spoke seven powerful statements that still speak to us today.

From the cross, He said, “Father, forgive them.” Even in agony, He chose forgiveness. That reminds us that no matter what has been done to us, forgiveness is not optional for those who follow Him.

He told the thief, “Today you will be with me in paradise.” In that moment, we see that grace is not earned. It is received. It is never too late for redemption.

He said, “Woman, behold your son.” Even while dying, He cared for others. That shows us that love does not stop in suffering.

He cried out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” He felt the weight of separation so we would never have to. Even in moments when we feel distant from God, we are never abandoned.

He declared, “I thirst.” The Savior of the world experienced human weakness. He understands our struggles, our pain, and our need.

Then He said, “It is finished.” Not “I am finished.” But “it is finished.” The work of sin’s defeat was complete. The debt was paid in full.

And finally, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” Even in death, Jesus trusted the Father completely.

But the story does not end on Friday.

Because early Sunday morning, everything changed.

The stone was rolled away. The tomb was empty. Death was defeated. What looked like loss turned into victory. What looked like the end became a new beginning.

Easter reminds us that God is still in the business of resurrection. He can take what is broken and bring it back to life. He can take what feels finished in your life and write a new chapter. The same power that raised Jesus from the grave is still at work today.

So, as you reflect on the cross, remember the cost.
And as you celebrate the empty tomb, remember the victory.

Friday shows us the sacrifice.
Sunday shows us the power.

And because of both, we now live with hope.Walk in grace. Stand in truth. Live blessed.
