On Monday, Aug. 31, Sardis Middle Lions faced off against Gaston Bulldogs in a close game at Sardis High’s football field. Gaston ultimately won with a score of 22-14 — but not without Sardis putting up a hard fight.
Gaston scored a touchdown in the 1st quarter very early on in the game, which put the Bulldogs in high spirits and seemed to set the tone for the night.
Before long, though, penalties began to rack up against Gaston, with several — including offsides calls, holding fouls, and false starts — occurring in just the first two quarters. Still, with Sardis unable to score any points throughout the first half, the scores were left lopsided — 6-0 — by the time halftime hit.
At the end of the 3rd quarter, Gaston made yet another touchdown, widening the gap between the teams with a score of 14-0 entering the 4th.
At the beginning of the 4th quarter, Gaston scored one last touchdown. After Sardis regained possession of the ball following this, things finally began to look up for the Lions, and theu pulled back with two touchdowns of their own with around 6:25 and 3:50 left on the clock. The score now up to 22-14, Sardis was presented with one final opportunity to level the playing field and beat Gaston when the Lions’ Xavier Grace put the stop on the Bulldogs at 2:07.
At around 1:50, Sardis managed to complete the pass, leaving the crowd on the edge of their seats — but Gaston proved to have the upper hand, and the Bulldogs were able to defend their territory over the next minute until the ball returned to their possession.
After the ball came back to Gaston, the coaches decided to let the clock run out, ending the game with a Bulldogs win of 22-14.
