Education forum slated for Jan. 7 with lawmakers

By Donna Thornton/News Editor

The year 2014 will kick off with a rare opportunity for people in the Gadsden-Etowah County area to learn more about the future of public education in the state of Alabama.

Delta Kappa Gamma, Society of Key Women Educators, and the student Democrats and Republicans at Gadsden State Community College have arranged an education forum “Our Children – Our Future” at 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 7 in the Helderman Hall Auditorium.

Susan Copeland, past president of Delta Kappa Gamma, said all members of the local legislative delegation are expected to attend the forum, to respond to prepared questions about the future of education in Alabama.

There will be a special address by Alabama Superintendent of Education Dr. Tommy Bice.

While there won’t be an open question and answer period, Copeland said the forum is open to the public and educators, parents, students and the public are encouraged to attend.

“We want everyone who has a concern for the future of education in Alabama to be there,” Copeland said.
