Gaston is facing a Trojan team this week that is experiencing the “small-school” curse this season.
Graduation hit Gaylesville hard and a few players have been injured, so the Trojans’ record isn’t where it should be.
“They’re having a little rough year,” said Gaston coach Swane Morris. “Their good running back got messed up in school, so he can’t play. But they’re as big as they’ve ever been. They’re close to the biggest team we’ll play this year.”
While the size is there, the skill players aren’t. They’re starting youngsters and kids who haven’t played varsity before.
“I think he (coach Kyle Garmon) will change some things around this week,” Morris said. “With it being a non-region game, he can experiment some.”
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs are getting healthy after four weeks of battling illness and injury.
“We’ve played injured all year,” Morris said. “But for the first time, we’ll be relatively healthy this week.”
Gaston is tied with Collinsville for fourth place in the current Class 2A, Re-gion 7 standings behind Fyffe, Cleveland and Section.
Last week against Spring Garden, Jordan Douglas and Jashon Cammeron each scored two touchdowns.
