The Neighborhood Scoop by Dr. Cynthia L. Toles

The New Canaan Baptist Church celebrated its 17th  anniversary on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 3 p.m. New Canaan Baptist is known as “A Little Church with a Big Heart.”

The program included a 50-plus mens choir from Birmingham called the Men of Praise.  These men did an awesome job of singing songs of praise.

Pastor Larry G. Weathers of the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church spoke on “Let’s Build the House.” Pastor Edward Jones and Sister Lavada Jones were the hosts.

Saturday, Oct. 11, was a great day for the ushers in the city of Gadsden, as the 2nd Annual Northeast District State Convention Usher’s Workshop met at the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. Sister Doris Jelks of the First Baptist Missionary Baptist Church of Alabama City is the Director of the Wills Creek Ushers and served as Mistress of Ceremony for the workshop.

The guest speakers and workshop presenters were Sister Mary Sherrill, Alabama Baptist Usher Director; Sister Mary F. Bailey-Mitchell, Northeast District Usher Director; and Brother James McHenry, Oklahoma, National Baptist Usher Director.

The class sessions included Duties and Techniques of Ushering, The Qualities of a Good Usher and The Ministry of Church Ushering. Brother Jessie Rawls is the TriCity Usher President.

Fun, games, speaker’s vendors and health screening were the happenings at the Quality of Life corporate office located at the Piedmont Cutoff in East Gadsden. The neighborhood event was called “Healthy Lifestyles, Healthy Community Festival.” Neighbors from all of the communities around came out even in the drizzling rain for face painting, inflatables, the Gadsden Fire Department Smokehouse, Zumba Demonstration and much more. It was a fun, healthy time for all in attendance.
