Etowah crushed Douglas in the Class 5A, Region 7 opener for both teams on Friday (Sept. 4), rolling to a 55-0 decision Friday night at DHS.
The Blue Devils (1-2, 1-0) limited Douglas to 99 yards in total offense.
Paul Ruiz’s 66-yard punt return gave Etowah a 6-0 lead at the 10:03 mark of the first quarter. The extra point made it 7-0.
Etowah drove 58 yards in six plays to make it 13-0. Darius Moore scored on a 3-yard run with 5:34 left in the opening period.
Andy Noles tossed a 49-yard scoring pass to A.J. Taylor with 3:02 remaining in the opening period. The point-after gave EHS a 20-0 advantage.
The Eagles drove to Etowah’s 6-yard line in the second quarter, but the series ended with an end-zone interception.
Etowah blocked a punt, and Moore returned it 31 yards for a touchdown with 2:30 left in the second. The PAT pushed it to 27-0.
The Blue Devils picked off a DHS pass and converted it into their final scoring drive of the first half.
Etowah moved 55 yards in seven plays, with Ruiz scoring on a 3-yard run with 34 seconds left. The extra point made it 34-0.
The Blue Devils opened the second half with a five-play, 57-yard touchdown drive. Stacy Williams found the end zone on a 1-yard run with 9:44 to go. The PAT put EHS in front 41-0.
Etowah returned an interception 52 yards to the DHS 14-yard line. Two plays later, Cory Thomas ran 5 yards for a TD at the 6:06 mark of the third period. The PAT extended it to 48-0.
The Eagles were forced to punt from their 1 late in the fourth quarter.
Etowah took over at the DHS 32 and scored in one play on Thomas’ 32-yard dash with 2:17 remaining.
Williams rushed nine times for 107 yards to lead the Blue Devils.
Etowah continues region play on Friday at home against Randolph.
